Rationale
Southeast Asia today becomes a dynamic region and is playing an important role

attention of many researchers in the world and in Southeast Asia itself. In fact, the
number of Southeast Asian studies research centers and researchers has increased rapidly,
especially in countries like the USA, Japan, China, Australia, Russia, Germany, Belgium,
the Netherlands, Canada, etc. The results of researches, teaching and training on
Southeast Asia not only enrich the knowledge about this region but also provide with
theoretical and practical basis for economic, political and diplomatic purposes of different
nations. As a result, Southeast Asian Studies has been developed strongly and becomes
one of the most attractive area studies in the world and in Southeast Asia.
However, as recently appeared in other regions, Southeast Asia is undergoing
critical changes at regional and country due to global integration. Therefore, Institute of
Asian studies (IAS) and Centre for European Studies, Chulalongkorn University jointly
propose an international workshop on colonialism and nationalism in Southeast Asia.
Colonialism and nationalism is still important framework to understand the formation of
modern nations and national identities in Southeast Asia. The intention of the workshop
is to gain a better understanding of the past and to highlight the importance of the past
and its impacts on the present and the future of Southeast Asia, as a region, and Southeast
Asian Studies.
